My New Obsession: Scandinavian Interior Design

When I think Scandinavian design, if your like me, you automatically think... fill in the blank, its a four letter word, starts with an I. Ok fine I'll tell you, you think IKEA. Right? Maybe its just me but Ikea made it popular to newbies such as myself. Ikea was my intro into this new world, plus we were a young family looking to fill our apartment up with some furniture and the prices were great and still are. However, the more I looked into Scandinavian design the more I fell in love with its concept of clean lines, pale colors and natural fabrics. These natural materials and lighter background colors with an occasional surprising burst of color found its origins in places like Norway, Denmark and Iceland. These regions had long winters and shorter days so they decorated with lighter, brighter and cleaner design. Hey I understand, I'm from Chicago where winters are brutal and long and the last thing you want to come home to is a dark and gloomy house.

My fascination started with Pinterest, I found myself attracted to the clutter free, fresh and crisp look of Scandinavian design. The furniture is lifted off the floors almost floating, by what appears to be twigs which make room for storage and clears away clutter and mess. The white walls bring an airiness of freshness and clarity and the natural fibers of linen, jute and cotton feel like a spring day and then there are these occasional sudden burst of colors sprinkled around the room in rugs, pillows, or art. I loved the way it made me feel when I saw the simplicity in each room that seem to be lacking something, but really they weren't, there was no overplay in them. Scandinavian design thrives off of the less is more concept.

I started pinning and pinning and by the time I looked back my Pin boards on Pinterest were filled with these minimalist influenced interiors.  Then it hit me - I'm obsessed with Scandinavian décor!

So this post is my attempt to familiarize you with this new found obsession of mine and perhaps get you on the band wagon. Here are some of my favorites in Scandinavian Interiors so far:

Benches, I love benches. This all white décor with a pop of wood is always good.

Typography art. The simplicity of words on a canvas.

Simple details like natural baskets and round mirrors are just the right touch.

Colorful rugs and pillows are to used to balance out the white walls.

Furniture design is characterized by simplicity and clutter free spaces.

Though Scandinavian design is clutter free, clean and crisp it has this touch of coziness that makes this style simple but homey.
Can you see why Scandinavian Interior design is my new obsession?
